Driveline inspection procedures

ArvinMeritor offers these suggestions to keep your drive shaft and U-joints functioning properly:

1. Check for excess tolerances before lubing application. Lube may mask, or hide excessive play and tolerances.

2. U-Joint maximum end play is .006 in.; more than that will result in failure.

3. Slip movement, up and down, maximum allowance is .017 in.; more than that will result in failure.

4. Dents, missing weights, dirt and foreign material buildup on shaft can cause vibration and balance issues, resulting in failure that can also cause damage to transmission and axle.

5. Determine type of bearings. Center bearings, new self-aligning style, have gold colored collar without deflectors. Self-align style became available in 2002 and will allow +/- 5° angle of deflection.

6. Know your driveshaft: Driveshaft standard slip application has splines that face the power source and end yoke. Driveshaft outboard slip assembly has splines that face toward rear of application.

7. Phasing: mark slip position with paint stripe during disassembly to make sure that you reassemble it in the same position and phasing to avoid timing and vibration issues.

8. Lubrication basic procedures: U-joints –– make sure that grease purges at all four seals to ensure that old grease does not contaminate new grease or create potential chemical incompatibility. For slip splines, 6 to 8 pumps from the grease gun are acceptable.

9. Refer to maintenance manu...

Inspect vehicle lifts

Rotary Lift urges technicians and maintenance managers to inspect their lifts. “Maintaining a safe, efficient repair shop is everyone’s responsibility,” says John Rylee, director of marketing. “Technicians should check lifts every day, and the fleet maintenance manager should schedule professional inspections annually. Regular inspections help ensure all the lifts in the shop are operating properly.”

The Automotive Lift Institute (ALI) also recommends all lifts be inspected by a qualified lift inspector at least annually, “to ensure reliability and the continued safe operation of the lift.”

The owner’s manual will provide inspection instructions for a specific lift. General guidelines are also available from the Lifting It Right safety manual published by ALI, and ANSI/ALI ALOIM:2008, the industry standard that outlines safety requirements for lift operation, inspection and maintenance. Both publications are available from ALI members (including Rotary Lift) and their distributors, as well as at www.autolift.org .

At a minimum, technicians should check the following daily:

Lift controls, as well as all locks and restraints, are working correctly. There is no deformation or excessive wear of any lift components, including posts, arms, hoses or wiring. There is no damage or excessive wear on any of the lift contact points, including adapters. There are no hydraulic leaks, cracks or loose concrete around floor anchors.

If any of these problems exist, or if the lift makes unusual noises or sudden movements, operates erratically, or creates chips or filings during use, the technician should stop using the lift and report the condition to a supervisor immediately so the lift can be repaired by factory-trained service personnel.

Rotary Lift has extended its Inspect to Protect program to help maintenance managers find local qualified lift inspectors through the Rotary Authorized Installer (RAI) N...

Inspections, lubrication are keys to lift maintenance

Lifts provide access to vehicles, enabling technicians to get more work done in less time, to maximize productivity and profitability. Proper lift maintenance practices will help provide a long service life.

To keep vehicle lifts operating properly, good maintenance and inspection practices are crucial. Rotary Lift offers the following advice:

• Read and follow the guidelines in your lift owner's manual. Maintenance and inspection requirements vary for different styles and brands of vehicle lifts. The owner's manual will cover the specific needs of each lift.

• Schedule annual inspections for all vehicle lifts. A factory-authorized technician should perform the inspection. Lift manufacturers can recommend authorized service companies in your area.

• Keep lifts well lubricated, according to manufacturers' guidelines.

• Whether maintenance is performed in-house or by an outside service company, insist on genuine OE replacement parts. OE parts were designed by the lift manufacturer to original design specifications. Aftermarket parts are reverse-engineered and may not use the same materials or incorporate the latest design changes, according to Rotary Lift. The Automotive Lift Institute (ALI) recommends using OE parts to ensure proper fit and function. Using aftermarket parts on an ALI-certified lift may void that lift's certification.

ALI offers general lift maintenance and inspection guidelines in a variety of materials, inclu...
